Interregional cooperation, which a variety of community initiatives encourage via European projects, comprises an essential focal point when it comes to sharing, promoting and disseminating experiences related to the conservation and enhancing the value of dry stone work.
Since 1996, the Consell de Mallorca has taken part in numerous projects, such as PROTERRA, which was involved in increasing the perceived importance of growing crops grown in terraces in southern Europe, and REPPIS, under the aegis of which the European Dry Stone Walls Project was created.
With CARREFOUR and MEDSTONE work was done, not only to give greater recognition to the trade of “marger”, or dry stone waller, and the dry stone heritage, but also to enhance collective awareness of this heritage.
At the same time, Parcours de Pierres and REVPAR-MEDOCC proposed methodologies of promotion of the heritage with the creation of cultural routes.
For their part, the PATTER project enabled a model of cataloguing to be agreed on for the terraced areas in southern Europe.
In 2004 the European Dry Stone Walls network was started up, in conjunction with REPS, with the aim of encouraging local development related to dry stone heritage. Simultaneously, the project TERRISC got underway; this opened up the line of study and recovery of terraced areas because of their role in the prevention of natural disasters.
Recently, the TCAST project has aimed at contributing to the preservation of the trade of marger by defining a method of inter-generational learning (old and young). Currently the EDSI project has been set up as a European network for the recognition of skills related to traditional craft trades connected to the preservation of the dry stone heritage.
More recently, he has participated in the GENES project in which experiences on management and awareness of the natural and cultural heritage were shared.
And between 2017 and 2019, the Serra de Tramuntana mountains was part of the Network of Emblematic Mediterranean Mountains, along with coastal mountains with a strong identity: Canigou and Sainte-Victoire (France), Mount Etna and the Gran Sasso (Italy), Mount Olympus and Mount Ida (Greece), Pedraforca and Serra de Tramuntana (Spain), and Mt. Cika (Albania). Through the EMbleMatiC project, which aimed to create a sustainable tourism offer (as an alternative to the traditional sun and beach), each region designed and implemented 1 eco-itinerary based on the uniqueness of these mountains.GENES
