The Galatzó mountain via the Son Fortuny estate

The walk

The highest point of the estate of Son Fortuny, now the property of the Consell de Mallorca, is the Puig de Galatzó, which rears up over the flat areas of the western part of the island. The conical silhouette of this 1,008 metres mountain rises up above other peaks such as Moleta Rasa, Mola de s'’Esclop and es Puntals, none of which are as high, and so help to draw even more attention to its arrogant presence, at the same time as facilitating marvellous views over most of the island from its summit.

Such a favoured position makes the mountain a point of reference and landmark for the locals. It is no coincidence that the summit is where the boundaries of the municipalities of Estellencs, Puigpunyent and Calvià meet. It is also here that the great estates of Galatzó, Son Net, Son Fortuny and es Ratxo meet, and where making the most of its location General Ibáñez de Íbero had a geodesic mark set up for the first time in the course of the work carried out to determine the Parallel of Paris.
